How this database is built
Freight methodology
Every number on this site is traceable to a primary source. Here is exactly how it gets here — and what we will never publish.
Sources
All fee data comes from carriers' published rules tariffs and accessorial schedules — the public documents each carrier posts (e.g. FXF 100 Series, CNWY 199, ODFL 100-series, EXLA 105). We record the document name, item number, page, a short verbatim quote, and the version's effective date for every row. We never use blog estimates, quote-tool outputs, or industry "typical ranges" as data.
Extraction and verification
Fees are extracted from tariff PDFs by automated extraction. Every row carries its citation — document, item number, page, and a short verbatim quote — and is checked against the cited document before publication, then re-verified on a schedule. Rows that fail verification never appear on the site or in the sitemap.
Collection practices
Collection is low-volume and identified. Our fetcher announces itself (AccessorialIndexBot, with a contact address), honors robots.txt rules and crawl delays, fetches only public, no-login documents, and treats any block as a no — blocked sources are checked manually or not at all, never worked around. If a source objects, we stop fetching it.
Change tracking
When a source document changes (a GRI or mid-year tariff revision), we don't overwrite history — the prior value is retained with its effective window, and the change appears in Updates. Pages show both the source's effective date and the date we last verified it.
What we deliberately exclude
NMFC freight classification data — classes, item numbers, and commodity tables — is licensed by the NMFTA and is not republished here in any form. We document reclassification fees; never classification data itself.
