What is detention without power?

It is the charge for a trailer that has been spotted at your facility and left there without a tractor — dropped-trailer demurrage rather than a held driver. Because no driver is waiting, the tariff bills it by the day instead of by the 15-minute increment used for detention with power.

FedEx Freight's rate is $273.00 per pup or vehicle for each 24-hour period or fraction thereof, excluding non-business days. A fraction of a period bills as a full one, so a trailer collected part-way into a second day is charged for two.

How does FedEx Freight's rate compare with other LTL carriers?

It is the highest in this index by a wide margin. Seven carriers publish detention without power as a flat per-day rate; FedEx Freight's $273.00 is $123.00 above the $150.00 median and more than five times AAA Cooper's $50.90, the lowest published rate in that group.

The exclusion of non-business days cuts the other way, and is worth reading closely: a trailer spotted on a Friday accrues charges differently under a tariff that excludes weekends than under one that does not. Several carriers in this index count them.

How is this different from the detention charge with power?

Same tariff item, different clock. With power, the driver and tractor stay and the charge runs at $82.00 per pup for each 15 minutes beyond free time, subject to a $97.00 minimum. Without power, the trailer is left and the charge runs at $273.00 per pup or vehicle per 24-hour period.

An invoice line reading only “detention” does not say which applies. Confirm whether the tractor stayed before checking the rate, because the two are not comparable and a with-power charge assessed at the without-power rate is an order-of-magnitude error.
